From Bean to Brew: Reducing Carbon Emissions in the Coffee Supply Chain

This report traces the emissions footprint of a standard 12 oz cup of coffee from farm to cup, drawing on research and insights from Olam Food Ingredients (ofi) to highlight key decarbonization strategies.

Coffee is central to modern life, supporting the livelihoods of millions of farmers around the globe. Yet as climate change intensifies — potentially reducing suitable coffee-growing areas by up to 50% by 2050 — we must reduce the carbon footprint of this beloved beverage.

This report examines the journey of a standard 12 oz cup of coffee from cultivation through consumption, highlighting the most significant sources of emissions and practical strategies for decarbonization. Throughout the report, we reference insights drawn from a combination of desk research, global partnerships, and on-the-ground learnings from Olam Food Ingredients (ofi), a leading supplier of food and beverage ingredients.
