Terrascope expands presence into USA and widens tooling to tackle product-level emissions

In a press release, Terrascope has announced that it is formally making its market entry into the United States.

This US launch marks Terrascope’s third major market expansion since its founding in Singapore in 2022.

As quoted from Maya Hari, Terrascope's CEO, "We’re setting a new standard in carbon footprinting and making important connections between enterprises and the supply chain globally. Our self-serve tool makes it easier than ever for companies to measure the climate impact of their products at scale, and take actionable steps to cut emissions across their entire supply chain. It’s a game-changer for consumer goods companies looking to uncover hidden emissions hotspots, drive real climate impact, and explore new green revenue opportunities."

Summary of Panel #2: Decarbonisation in Action

The panel, moderated by Nat Bullard, CSO of Halcyon, featured Claire Perry O'Neill, ex-UK Minister for Energy and Clean Growth, Felipe Daguila, Terrascope’s Chief Customer Officer and Sherry Madera, CEO of CDP, who spoke about practical decarbonization strategies and the need for measurable, actionable steps.

During the panel, Claire discussed her experience as the former UK Minister of State responsible for Clean Energy & Responsible Growth, and emphasizes the importance of reducing emissions where they are highest and rapidly accelerating decarbonization efforts. While progress has been made, she stated, the pace must accelerate.

Reduction and removal of CO2 is imperative, and Climate Week only stresses the necessity for ‘just transitions’ that can be numerically defined and achieved at both government and corporate levels.

Responding to this, Felipe agreed with Claire in that decarbonization should be viewed not only as a responsibility but also as an opportunity to create corporate value. He emphasized this need for initiatives that integrate sustainability with corporate value creation, highlighting that decarbonization initiatives can indeed be financially beneficial.

Sherry, drove home this point by emphasising the criticality of data to back decarbonization efforts. For one, she emphasised the importance of measurement for effective management, presenting data that companies that disclose their emissions see significant reductions within a few years. Although mandatory disclosures may hurt initially, transparency leads to cost and emissions savings.

Their conversation soon shifted to the practicalities of decarbonization and its role in business strategy. Felipe discussed the business perspective, splitting companies into three categories: those focused on reporting due to regulatory demands, those integrating sustainability into business planning, and those uncertain about how to proceed.

This, posed a conundrum to companies navigating reporting for the first time, especially as Claire highlighted that the issue has been largely confined to specialists, making it inaccessible to broader business participation. She stressed the need to simplify jargon and engage the private sector actively in the conversation to foster broader and faster action.

Active engagement, not the retroactive shifting of goalposts is instrumental for effective decarbonisation, as many countries and companies miss their targets and often respond by simply setting new ones without understanding the root causes of their shortcomings.

Businesses, as the panelists agreed, must pivot conversations from compliance-driven discussions to how decarbonization can create tangible value. He drew attention to the need for measurable and actionable plans that businesses can implement to see real-world benefits both for the environment and their bottom lines.

Stay tuned for more discussions and insights as we continue to explore ways to combat climate change and work towards a decarbonized world.

Summary of Panel #1:  Proven Strategies for Suppliers & Brands

Moderated by Maya Hari, CEO of Terrascope, this panel featured Julie Greene, CSO at Olam Agri, and Jennifer Hebets, Senior Director for Responsible Sourcing at Kelanova.

Their conversation delved into decarbonization journeys, with Olam Agri's focus on staple commodities and extensive farmer collaborations, and Kellanova's efforts in securing supply and partnerships. Data, market mechanisms, and evolving business strategies were what the panelists identified as key building blocks for any decarbonisation strategy. They also agreed that there was a strong, significant need for market-based incentives and pragmatic business engagement to drive substantial change in the agrifood sector.

Julie discussed Olam Agri's comprehensive approach to mapping out its supply chains and the challenges of quantifying carbon impact. Starting out from a single spreadsheet, the company has completely revolutionized their approach, moving towards Terrascope to identify carbon hotspots. Olam Agri has been enabled by Terrascope’s capabilities to prioritize 40 intervention areas, such as renewable energy in factories and improved farming practices. Specific projects include reducing methane emissions in rice cultivation through alternate wetting and drying, and regenerating soils in cotton farming by increasing organic matter, especially in West Africa.

Jennifer spoke more about Kellanova's journey. Having made strides in tackling its Scope 1 and 2 emissions, Kellanova has turned its focus to its Scope 3 footprint, which constitutes the majority of its carbon emissions. Kellanova’s partnership with Terrascope has reaped dividends, particularly as the company has gained a granular understanding of its carbon footprint and launched numerous initiatives involving suppliers and MRV partners, of which examples include, no-till farming in Mexico and a local ecosystem project in North Carolina.

These real, on-the-ground examples returned to the crux of their conversation: that data-driven decisions, long-term farmer partnerships, and scalability are crucial in the decarbonisation journeys of today. The need for market mechanisms, government incentives, and industry collaboration to promote sustainable practices on a larger scale, only reinforces that.

Thanks for attending!

Decarbonizing the Agri-Food Value Chain: Strategies for Suppliers & Brands” went off without a hitch! Jennifer Hebets of Kellanova, Julie Greene of Olam Agri, and Maya Hari of Terrascope had an engaging conversation around proven strategies and live case studies on achieving decarbonisation across global supply chains. The multi-faceted nature of climate change as we understand it requires thorough granular understanding of world supply chains with hundreds, if not thousands, of stakeholders. As they discussed, there are real benefits towards utilising Terrascope's platform for managing thousands of line items and SKUs, across both Scope 3 - and the diverse, thousands-strong portfolio of agri-food companies around the world.

Struggling with how you can gain visibility over tens of thousands of SKUs without supplier data?

For companies that sit within consumer goods and the extended agri-food supply chain, decarbonising Scope 3.1 purchased goods & services seems like an insurmountable challenge, especially when reliant upon generic emission factors.

Product Carbon Footprint offers an intelligent alternative to estimating the emissions from their purchased goods, offering tangible decarbonisation insights, but can be costly to generate at a large scale. If you are in the food & beverage or agri sector managing a large number of products this is the tool for you!
